Your WordPress site has a shadow audience

There’s a version of your website you’ve never seen. No design, no navigation, no hero image. It’s the version agents are looking for.

A woman walking while her shadow operates several digital tools.

Over the past few months, the web has forked into two. One side is for humans, the other is for agents. Here’s what has already happened:

Shopify Agentic Commerce → Agents can now browse products, manage carts and execute checkouts programmatically. The platform works with MCP’s that are UCP-compliant (Universal Commerce Protocol). UCP defines the interactions between multiple commerce players (including payment providers). Products are so well defined (SKU/characteristics) that this is a natural agentic path, even if it involves money. The storefront is now completely optional, similar to ghost kitchens on UberEats.

Cloudflare Agentic Gateway → Cloudflare built a separate gateway specifically for agent traffic. It protects against “Shadow MCP” (unauthorised or unvetted Model Context Protocol servers) by acting as a secure, centralised intermediary that enforces Zero Trust policies on AI agent interactions. By routing all MCP traffic through Cloudflare, companies transform the uncontrolled “shadow” landscape into a secure, logged, and compliant infrastructure. This is smart as it doesn’t restrict employees from installing MCP’s or experimenting, but does keep them safe.

CLI’s for Agents → Stripe and Vercel have extended their surfaces for machines, not humans. On this side of the fork, agents don’t integrate with services but operate them directly. The CLI becomes a capability layer agents can call, observe, loop on and validate outcomes without touching a UI. Even personally, I have a handful of small CLI’s that agents package repeating processes in and then optimise. It’s where vibe-coding goes to scale.

Agentic WordPress → WordPress is the best-positioned CMS for the agentic web. The Abilities API turns any WordPress site from readable to operable (via MCP or direct). Abilities can be registered by core, by plugins, or by your own custom code. You can fully agentify your SEO without ever logging-in. This extensibility and flexibility are unparalleled. WordPress is the only CMS with an ecosystem play that is actually happening (vs many other AI point-features or bolt-on chatbots).

That version of your website you’ve never seen? It already exists. Right now, it’s empty. But it won’t be for long. It’s necessary as it will help you automate the busy, while exposing the key insights that need addressing, thereby helping you focus on the website’s mission and growth.

The “shadow” version of your site is coming either way. The question is whether you shape it. We’re working towards making this a reality on the A/B testing and Personalisation front with our Accelerate plugin. If you’re exploring this, I’d love to hear how you’re thinking about it.
