HM joins the mission to make WordPress accessible

At Human Made, we believe in building a web that is open, inclusive, and accessible to everyone. We are proud to sponsor Rian Rietveld’s latest project, a comprehensive Accessibility Knowledge Base for WordPress.

Why accessibility must be a priority

WordPress powers over 40% of the web. That reach brings enormous influence and an equally enormous responsibility. Accessibility is not a “nice extra”. It is essential for:

  • Inclusivity: Ensuring that people of all abilities can use, navigate, and enjoy the web.
  • Compliance: Compliance: Meeting accessibility requirements outlined in legislation around the world, such as the European Accessibility Act (EAA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018 for the UK. Non-compliance can lead to costly legal action and reputational harm.
  • Good business: Accessible sites reach more people, create better user experiences, and demonstrate social responsibility.

Yet for many WordPress professionals and site owners, accessibility resources are scattered, inconsistent, or difficult to interpret. This project changes that.

About the WP Accessibility Knowledge Base

Led by accessibility expert and previous HM team mate Rian Rietveld, the Hub will become the single source of truth for WordPress accessibility. It will:

  • Consolidate guidelines, tutorials, and testing tools in one central location
  • Cover accessibility for both WordPress users and those who design, develop, and build with WordPress
  • Be free, open, and community-driven
  • Stay up to date with evolving standards, tools, and platform changes

“I’m grateful to Human Made for sponsoring my work on the WP Accessibility Knowledge Base — it is so important that companies recognise the need for work like this and invest in accessibility. I am excited to create a resource that will boost inclusivity and help remove barriers for so many people.”

Rian Rietveld, web accessibility specialist

The mission is clear: make it easier for everyone to create and maintain accessible WordPress sites – no excuses!

Our commitment at Human Made

By sponsoring this initiative, we are supporting the research, content creation, and technical work required to bring the Knowledge Base to life. This is part of our broader commitment to open source contribution and to making the web a more equitable place.

The web should be a place where everyone feels welcome and included, no matter how they access it. At Human Made, we know accessibility is about more than ticking boxes – it’s about empowering people and removing barriers. Supporting Rian’s work on the Accessibility Knowledge Hub is one way we’re helping the WordPress community step up, learn, and take real action. Together, we can make the web a better place for everyone.”

A call to the WordPress community

Accessibility is not optional. It is a shared responsibility. Whether you are a developer, designer, content creator, agency owner, or site administrator, you have the power to make the web better for everyone.

  • Audit your sites and workflows for accessibility gaps.
  • Learn from the Knowledge Base once it launches and share it widely.
  • Act on what you learn to improve your projects and educate your peers.

Together, we can ensure WordPress leads the way in building an internet that welcomes all. Let us do better for inclusivity, for compliance, and for the future of the web.
